A Communion of White

At this moment, St. Louis (whence I type) is experiencing a downfall of snow and the grace that comes on the eve of a snow day. Imagine my surprise as I spent a moment in The Deacon's Bench and read these words from writer James Stephen Behrens, a Trappist monk of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery in Conyers, Georgia:

All of life is a Communion Call -- as if God is the ever present first
Friday Visitor, asking that we be with him, receive him, welcome him.

I
look at the beauty of freshly fallen snow -- it is rare, here in
Georgia, to have snow. Just yesterday I was telling a group in our
retreat house that I used to love the sound of falling snow when I
lived in the northeast. There was that pervasive hiss as the snow fell
and touched the earth. Even when the snow stopped falling, there seemed
to be a sound in the air, the sound of snow, a peaceful yet rich sound.
Something like a communion of white, of innocence, of purity. Billions
of hosts, coming softly to the earth, covering everything. A gift from
God, as is everything, coming from above, arising from below,
whispering to me as to where he is, communing with us.

The whole universe is a Mass -- feeding us every day. The banquet of God, this life we live. It is special, very special.

Honestly, I found the video a bit annoying, as it featured a lot of name and number dropping.

However, he did say something quite clever - "You can't spell catechism without 'tech.'" I'm going to let that cook in my brain a bit. Interesting...

via the blog at Collide.

A New Soul

At this past week's Macworld Expo, the MacBook Air was revealed. Once I saw the ad, I had to find out more about the song. I just love the lyrics: "I'm a young soul, in this very strange world hoping I could learn a bit about what is true and fake."

Here's the video:

I love this video because it gives us an image of the Divine Creator as artist. The singer paints images that become reality - in a beautiful and surprising way.

I'm also reminded of this letter:

Overseeing the mysterious laws governing the universe, the
divine breath of the Creator Spirit reaches out to human genius and stirs
its creative power. He touches it with a kind of inner illumination which
brings together the sense of the good and the beautiful, and he awakens
energies of mind and heart which enable it to conceive an idea and give it
form in a work of art. It is right then to speak, even if only
analogically, of "moments of grace", because the human being is
able to experience in some way the Absolute who is utterly beyond. - John Paul II, In a Letter to Artists

A Hat Tip to the Creator

Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain, a revered graphic designer, offers an explanation to the somewhat unusual name of his blog, www.31three.com:

When I was starting the business 5+ years ago, my wife and I were
wrestling with what to name it. After a couple days of thumbing through
dictionaries and thesauruses looking for the perfect name, Heather
stumbled on an obscure text in the book of Exodus (31:3) that talks
about God placing his Spirit on a guy named Bezalel to be creative, and
to make stuff.

Not only have I filled him
with my Spirit, but I have given him wisdom and made him a skilled
craftsman who can create objects of art with gold, silver, bronze,
stone, and wood.

These words really resonated
with me. Stepping out into business on my own was a real step of faith,
and by naming my business after these words, it was kind of my way of
tipping my hat to the Creator. Every time I have to explain
to someone what the name means, it reminds me of my beginnings, and
where I believe creativity comes from... and there's something about
thoughts like those that help me stay grounded.

It has been my experience that in design work, the really great designers pay close attention to detail. The biblical reference in the name of 31three is a great detail that allows for deep, yet subtle, meaning.

Religious Allergies?

I love the smell of incense. Perhaps this goes back to my days in middle school, when I would get out of class to serve at funeral masses. In the sacristy, we would always fight who got to light the charcoal (a.k.a. "the oreo") and who could spoon on the incense (a.k.a. "the fruity pebbles").

I also love the symbolism of incense. Especially the image of our prayers rising to God just like the incense. Or, as I once heard from Mike Carotta, incense reminds us of how "sometimes we get burned."

As a fan of incense, it always bums me out when I learn of someone allergic to incense. I know people who can't even be in church at the same time as a lit thurible. The real shame here is that some folks are missing out on rich sacramental symbols.

Unfortunately, this allergy (and many others) is for real.

[snip]

In an increasingly susceptible world, where more and more people are
realizing that things like nuts and wheat and even certain pungent
scents can make them quite sick, religious organizations are
reconsidering the most time-honored of traditions.

stores are offering hypo-allergenic incense. Churches are banning
cologne and cutting way back on Easter lilies. Fresh pine boughs for
the holidays are often out. A group of nuns in Missouri have invented a
host with only a trace of wheat so that the gluten-sensitive could
digest it.

I don't know if the "gluten-free" hosts are delicious.
This, along with "Where do you need to find God today?" are the questions posed to visitors to www.other6.com.

When you visit this site, you'll encounter a screen full of bubbles that, when you hover over them with your mouse, offer an answer to these questions. The answers that you see come from all over the world.

The name "other6" refers to the days of the week other than Sunday, when most people find (or attempt to find) God in church services. The gift of this website is focusing our attention on finding God during the rest of the week.
