Ah... The Rock 'n Roll Lifestyle

I often wonder: instead of spending years studying philosophy in college, if I should have joined a band and gone on tour. We all have secret dreams of becoming rock stars, right?

Pope Benedict XVI seems to have figured this out for me:

[Music] "has the power to lead us back ... to the Creator of all harmony, creating a resonance within us which is like being in tune with the beauty and truth of God, with the reality which no human knowledge or philosophy can ever express."

Now, I must be clear: B16 spoke these words after hearing the Bamburg Symphony Orchestra play in the courtyard of the apostolic palace at Castelgandolfo. I would guess that after hearing me play my favorite Wilco or Bob Dylan songs, the Pope would have something else to say...

The point is this: I should have stayed in school. (And I did!)

The larger point is this: The stuff coming out of our iPods (or comparable mp3 player) has the potential to bring us closer to our God.

If this isn't spiritually delicious, I don't know what is.

UPDATE: For more on the Pope and music, read about how some British musicians just sent him a new iPod filled with contemporary liturgical music - at Catholic News Service.

SIDENOTE: Speaking of delicious technology, new iPods were revealed today. Nice...
